Another class completed---two more are waiting for me: Nutritional Influences on Health and Basic Herbology. Then it's on to Elements of Traditional Naturopathy...and yes, I'm a nerd...I think they sound very interesting and I can't wait to dive in! Oh, well, someone has to play the nerd role/I love to study & read huge books...and apply all this amazing knowledge in what I do! And it's only by God's grace that I'm moving forward with this---yes, He answers prayers!
This will be a short entry (yeah, right!) being I'm soon ready to head out the door to meet my sweet husband in Phoenix--then leave in the AM for a week! Yes, I'm taking my textbooks with me...and my highlighters...and our laptop. :)
In the middle of one of my chapters in 'Staying Healthy with Nutrition' the author ends a segment in the Special Supplements section with the following statement:
Ultimately, we'll see that maintaining alkalinity and lowering inflammation in the body with consistent good nutrition and regular exercise is going to be our best program for ensuring (and insuring) cardiovascular health.
Hmmmm.....He didn't mention a single medication or treatment for cardiovascular health...Hmmm...
I would take his statement one step further and change the words 'cardiovascular health' to 'overall health.'
The KEY is NOT waiting until something big/bad happens healthwise. Time for building prevention and a true feeling of wellness into our lives is NOW.
Taking small steps in changing what we eat...in the quality of our water...in the quality of our sleep...in making sure we get regular exercise...will pay off immensely in the long run. Remember his mention of 'alkalinity' -- check out some of my previous blogs if you're not familiar with it and how important it is to our health.
One last pointer when it comes to what we eat. Ditch the "I'm going on a diet" or "I'm on a diet" -- we're ALL on some type of diet (obviously some tremendously more healthy than others)! How about saying, "I'm changing my diet" or "I'm changing my diet for the better" (making one small change at a time, like adding a green salad every day).
May you each be blessed with great health--
Sana

Barley Grass (Jades) Details--Straight From My Textbook!
I know...I know...I already have a post/blog about the benefits of barley grass (back in July)---but it's so cool reading about it from a total 3rd party perspective (ie. my current Naturopathy textbook, 'Healthy Healing' by Page). And it honestly is that important for great health!
Barley grasses fall under the category of 'Nature's Superfoods.' They are one of the lowest-calorie (Yay!) & most nutrient-rich foods on the planet.
Here's what my text has to say about barley grass ('Jades' to some of us)...
Barley grass has:
*10X more calcium than cow's milk
*5X more iron than spinach
*7X more vitamin C & bioflavonoids (anti-inflammatory part of Vit C) than orange juice
*80 mcg of Vitamin B12/100 Gm of powdered juice---that's huge!
*antiviral activity (flu & 'colds' are caused by viruses)
*neutralizes heavy metals like mercury
*an ideal anti-inflammatory
*richest food source of the antioxidant isoflavone 2-0-GIV (works with DNA repair)
Once more from my text by Linda Page:
Studies on barley grass show that it has the capacity to aid a wide range of health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes, ulcers, liver disease, asthma, eczema, anemia, burns & even cancer.
Another major reason that most people who take a barley grass supplement do so is to maintain a healthy slightly alkaline pH in their body. According to Dr. Robert Young (one of many health experts writing on the benefits of alkalinity), 'Overacidification of body fluids & tissues underlies ALL disease...for one thing, it is only when a body is acidic that it is vulnerable to germs. In short, good health requires a body on proper pH balance: slightly alkaline.' (excerpts from his book, 'The pH Miracle).
My family & I take 'Jades' or Jade Greenzymes, a whole food, organic green barley supplement. I honestly don't consider it a supplement---it's a basic food for every day that 'builds disease prevention into our lives' ... simply, safely & effectively.
Let me know if you have questions about barley greens -- or any other questions/requests for blogs--
May you be blessed with true health...

The pH Balancing Act
Now that we've learned a bit about why it's crucial to keep our bodies slightly alkaline, how about finding out how to do just that?
My family and I, along with millions of others around the world have found simple, SAFE & effective ways to promote an alkaline environment in our bodies. The 3 basic areas where we impact the pH of our bodies are Sleep, Water and Nutrition. All three are part of the whole wellness picture or wellness home environment.
We impact our body's pH during sleep by using specially designed sleep pads, pillows and comforters with magnetic, far infrared and negative ion technologies. The water we drink is filtered, energized and slightly alkaline, after passing through a specialized filtration unit. (Distilled water and reverse osmosis water are both quite acidic---more on that later!) We also take a certain green barley extract (mixed in water or juice) that promotes alkalinity. That's the nutrition component.
Very simple, easy to incorporate into our busy lifestyles---and powerful in their effects.
Tomorrow: The link between heartburn (the body being too acidic) and water intake.
To your health...

Think Alkaline---pH REALLY Matters!
Okay, please hang with me just a bit longer as I give a bit more info on the powerful impact that the pH level in our body has on our overall health. I know it can get a bit boring or technical---I apologize for that---The 'rest of the story' (effective ways to promote an alkaline environment) is coming tomorrow!
Major take-home point: Virtually all degenerative diseases including cancer, heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, kidney and gall stones, and tooth decay are associated with excess acidity in the body. Cancer cannot exist in an alkaline environment. All forms of arthritis are associated with excess acidity. Acid in the body dissolves both teeth and bones.
The body has a homeostatic (regulatory) mechnaism that maintains a constant pH of 7.4 in the blood by depositing and withdrawing acid and alkaline minerals from bones, soft tissues, body fluids and saliva. This can cause the pH of these tissues to fluctuate greatly. The pH of your saliva provides an overall look at the pH of your body. While there can be a wide range of pH values for the saliva and urine, the value for the blood is maintained within narrow bounds.
pH of Various Body Tissues:
Skeletal muscle 6.9 - 7.2
Heart 7.0 - 7.4
Liver 7.2
Brain 7.1
Blood 7.35 - 7.45
Saliva 6.0 - 7.4
Urine 4.5 - 8.0
Biology class dismissed. :o) Thanks for hanging in there---This is powerful information!

Remember This...pH Matters!
I realize that you're bombarded every day with Wellness-related information on what to do, what not to do, what to eat, what not to eat, how to exercise, now not to exercise....the list goes on!
One of the most key pieces of information that I've learned over the past 12 years is the importance of keeping our bodies in a slightly alkaline state. It's encouraging to see that this topic is getting some press in women's magazines. These articles tend to focus on the issue, but offer little if any information in HOW to keep our bodies in this pH-balanced environment.
Over acidity in our bodies can weaken all of our body systems. It can make the internal environment of our bodies more prone to developing diseases, as opposed to a pH-balanced environment (slightly alkaline) which allows normal body function necessary for the body to resist disease.
A healthy body maintains adequate alkaline reserves to meet the emergency demands of our bodies often brought on by stress (of any kind). This stress causes an excess of acids in our body, which must be neutralized, which in turn depletes our alkaline reserves, leaving the body in a weakened condition.
The concept of acid alkaline imbalance as the cause of disease is not new. William Howard Hay published a ground-breaking book in 1933: A New Health Era in which he maintains that all disease is caused by autotoxication (or "self-poisoning") due to acid accumulation in the body.
Some reasons that our bodies are too acidic include the typical American diet, which is way too high in acid-producing animal products like meat, eggs and dairy, and way too low in alkaline-producing foods like fresh vegetables. Processed foods like white flour and sugar produce acidity in our bodies as does drinking acid-producing beverages like coffee and soft drinks. Most medications are acid-forming. Artificial chemical sweeteners are extremely acid-forming. One of the best things we can do to correct an overly-acid body is to make simple changes in our diet, focusing MORE on fresh vegetables and LESS on processed foods and large amounts of animal proteins.
Be watching for future postings on specific wellness measures that help keep the body slightly alkaline as well.
